My Work Journey with Tang Hall Employment
My journey into work with Tang Hall Employment has not always been easy. I have faced a number of challenges, including homelessness and poor mental health, alongside the difficulties of managing my personality disorder, disability, anxiety and depression. These barriers have often made it difficult for me to maintain employment, manage communication and find a role that suits my needs.
With the support of Tang Hall Employment I have had the opportunity to explore different roles and develop my skills. I initially tried working as a Music Support Assistant and later as a Library Worker. Although these experiences were valuable, I found it challenging to sustain these roles due to my personal circumstances and mental health. Throughout this process, the team at Tang Hall Employment showed me understanding, patience and encouragement, helping me to recognise my strengths and explore other opportunities rather than giving up.
With ongoing, person-centred support, flexibility, regular encouragement and an understanding of my individual needs, I have now found a role that works well for me as a Data Checker. Having the right support and an employer who understands my challenges has made a huge difference to my confidence, wellbeing and ability to maintain work.
I am now looking forward to continuing my development and, once I have completed my Peer Mentoring training later this year, hope to take on a second role. My journey shows how the right opportunities, patience and consistent support can help someone overcome barriers, build confidence and find meaningful employment.
Roxanne
Roxanne started off with a volunteering placement and thanks to her hard work, dedication and her fantastic rapport with young children, she was hired as a paid staff member as from May 2026 and is now a member of the York Explorers staff team!
Roxy had initially joined Tang Hall Smart a number of years ago as a student and then once she finished her education, she moved onto our supported employee programme at Tang Hall Employment. She did placements through Montessori and York Explorers, a childcare qualification and she blossomed
York Explorers After School Club and York Childcare have an inclusive approach to employment and are proactive in offering opportunities to young SEN adults who are a huge asset to the workforce.

I started engaging with Tang Hall Employment in 2024, and I didn't have many other options if I am honest. I had come into recovery after a long-term substance misuse issue, 22 years. After starting with the Kickstart class at Tang Hall SMART, I registered with Tang Hall Employment and began working with young people with special educational needs in the sports hall, helping out with sessions. Then an opportunity arose and I went out in the community to do some boxing, which is something I can do anyway, and it was nice going out into the community to do this. And the role has evolved, and from that I got a small role with the Salvation Army, and from that I ended up working with refugees at RAY which is something I have always wanted to do. I have been really lucky, and blessed to have been given these opportunities. My experiences in recovery have made me realise that you have to have a team of people around you if you want to go somewhere in life, you can't just do it on your own.
Georgina
I started at Tang Hall SMART in 2022 as a student and then became a Supported Employee in 2024 with the help of Tang Hall Employment. I was given the opportunity to work alongside students and staff members to help me develop key work skills that would help me gain employment in the future. I also successfully completed my Level 1 Childcare and Level 1 Teaching Assistant qualification which has really helped me a lot. My role as a Supported Employee included supporting a variety of group sessions and students that required pastoral support. I have gained so much from doing this which has led to me gaining part time employment with Tang Hall SMART. I really love supporting people and I feel like one of my strengths is being able to observe when people need support and providing the compassion and support that is needed to help them. I love working with the staff that helped me so much when I was a student at Tang Hall SMART and now I'm able to pass on my skills to help other students.
